In in this digital age, some old school technology still exists, even continues to thrive. The method of publication may have changed, and the "user" interface may have changes, but the medium is still the same. Books. There's something special about a page turner. A read so fascinating that you can't put it down, so compelling that you give up sleep to keep reading. I don't if what I recommend here will compell you to want to read start to finish, however its my hope that some of what I share with you will stimulate your imagination when it comes to the rich fabric that is our cultural history. My first recommended read is "Blues People by Leroi Jones. Its is revealing look at American society, culture and history. The insight here is very sharp and at times stunning. Leroi's writing style is poignant and impactful. Next on the list is Eric Clapton's autobiography. Eric may not be a jazz man, but he certainly knows his blues. This book chronicles his life in an engaging tone and really gives insights as to the influences in Clapton's life. And finally, this book was sent to me by my friend Marlene Weller. Three wishes. A snapshot of jazz artists and their response to the offer of three wishes. In their responses you see the hopes and dreams of everyday people. A page turner as you read wishes after wishes from some of the greats of jazz. |
